More Infrared...

Today's small test demonstrated that the IR frequencies I'm working with pass through common window glass quite freely.

Quite useful, since my DIY pass filter is rather flimsy and would require a supporting substrate.

Infrared experiments

I've been experimenting a bit with using infrared (IR) phototransistors and LEDs as a proximity detector circuit for a possible future project.

The test circuit is a simple one but adequate to test the parameters I was curious about: waving a hand over the…

Flashingblinkylights

If you're looking for LED flashers and such for a project, visit flashingblinkylights

These guys have EVERY trashy plastic LED piece of crap the Chinese have ever built -- quite impressive in a perverse and twisted way.

I've recently ordered 5 pieces of a multi-color LED flasher module…

Igor! More Power!

I've been playing with the flash circuit from a single-use camera, and after reverse engineering the circuit I've begun making some changes.

The standard design uses a blocking oscillator running on a 1.5 volt AAA battery to produce 300 volts across a large capacitor. The capacitor is then discharged through the itty-bitty flash tube in about 1/1000 second.

After some modification (removing the big capacitor, flash tube, and trigger circuit) and adding a…

Concept: Absinthe Snow Cones?

Valid concept or mildly insane?

New Grand-Kid!!

My daughter, Jill, and my new grand-daughter, Dahlia (don't ask, 'cause I don't know why) came home from the hospital yesterday afternoon.

Dahlia was born Thursday morning and weighed in at 7 lbs. 12 oz. and 19 inches long and mother and daughter are in excellent health.

Sadly, my son-in-law, Corey, was not present since he's in pre-deployment training with the Army Reserves.

Concept --

Combination catapult and bird bath: changing the water would be much more amusing.

DeathTronics Mark III Coil Driver

The DeathTronics Mark III Coil Driver is functional, although I'm not quite satisfied with the hardware or the display.

Next up: Making the coil(s) visually compatable.

The Weekend....

I spent some time testing my last couple of batches of absinthe this weekend, and I'm quite happy to say that it's still good!

Amazingly volatile stuff though... The flavor changes with temperature and the anise oil evaporates at a surprising rate -- about as fast as the alcohol -- so a glass left unattended gradually loses it's louche and flavor.

Not really that surprising since virtually all of the anise oil comes off the kettle in the first half of the distillation with most…

Blog Posting?

This feature has been turned off since early on due to the lack of filtering/screening by Ning which allowed robo posting, but I think that problem has been fixed so I've turned it back on.

Give it a try and see if it works for you.

Be sure to check your settings when you do a blog post if you want to keep it personal, just friends or everyone.

Green Steam Circus!

All set and ready to go!

I've never been to an event like this (or indeed a Steampunk event!) so it's going to be an 'experience'. I shall also be bringing my old 35mm camera to document the festivities and am planning on setting up a photo site with one of the photo-sharing outfits. Anyone got a recommendation? (Photobucket has become a real PITA to deal with -- more ads than photos.)

Blog Added...

I've just plugged in this blog feature to see if it's something useful.

NOTE: If you use the personal "My Page" blog, be sure to set the "Friends Only" flag when you post or it will appear here.

Give it a shot and see if it works for you!
